Wellness Walks

Why walk for wellness?

Studies have shown that spending time walking outdoors can significantly reduce stress and anxiety.

However, we often feel that we need to march along, to rush through the landscape, but in this way we miss so much. The natural world operates at its own pace, a pace that is often slower and more deliberate than our fast-paced lives. By aligning yourself with this rhythm, you can find a sense of calm and balance.

So, make time for yourself this August and let these Wellness Walks with Rosie be your haven. Soak up the natural world and regenerate with a fully qualified, knowledgeable and friendly walking therapist, and learn how to make this rich and fulfilling activity part of your own regular routine. As you embark on these Wellness Walks, allow yourself to fully engage with your surroundings. Notice the intricate details of the flora and fauna, the subtle changes in light and shadow, and the soothing sounds of nature. Each step you take is an opportunity to reconnect with yourself and the environment.

Rosie will guide you through mindful walking practices that encourage you to tune into your senses and be fully present in the moment. You’ll learn techniques to quiet your mind, release tension from your body, and cultivate a deep sense of inner peace. These walks are not just about physical exercise; they are a holistic experience that nourishes both body and soul.

Where do the Wellness Walks take place?

The Wellness Walks take place at several routes in the Downpatrick area of Northern Ireland. All routes are accessible by foot, and there is parking available. There will not usually be toilet facilities along the route but the joining pack will indicate the closest facilities.

What happens on a Wellness Walk?

These Wellness Walks offer something for everyone. They provide a safe and supportive space where you can recharge your batteries and work things through in the most beautiful of surroundings. The content of each walk will be different, as the seasons, routes and company changes, but the general theme is one of structured activities to guide the group into a place of calm wellbeing.

We will use grounding, breathing and somatic techniques as we walk slowly along a flat terrain, taking in what we see as we go. There will be some carefully structured guidance on what to do at certain points to enhance your feelings of connectedness with nature, but nothing is mandatory – you can always choose which elements to take part in throughout the walk. There will be regular stops where we will use tools to bring our attention into our bodies and the environment, and get us out of our heads. There will also be a seated break halfway through, and you can bring treats to share at this point, if you’d like.

At the end of each walk, you’ll have the chance to reflect on your journey, share insights with others, and set intentions for bringing the benefits of wellness walking into your daily life. So, lace up your walking shoes and step into a world of tranquility and renewal.

Is a Wellness Walk suitable for me?

A basic standard of fitness is required, and you should be able to walk at a slow and steady pace for about half a mile. We don’t walk far, but there is a fair bit of standing involved, and everyone should evaluate if this kind of activity is a good and comfortable fit for them.

The routes are mostly flat after access, but there may be some muddy patches, or puddles, and the walks go ahead even in light rain so appropriate clothing is required.

Disability access: wheelchair access is available at one route, so make sure to inform us if you are a wheelchair user and we can ensure the appropriate route is available.

What about the weather?

We would prefer to run every Wellness Walk in warm sunshine, but this is Downpatrick, Northern Ireland. Rosie’s Space will carry out a WeatherWatch 24 hours in advance and notify all participants if adverse conditions force a cancellation, but where possible we will walk, even in light rain. We reserve the right to cancel the activity at short notice, should the weather deteriorate.

When are the walks taking place?

Thereafter, Dark Walks will begin in October 2024 , which will add the aspect of twilight and ancient place to the experience. There will be Shamanic Drumming, visualisation and hot chocolate to warm us up.

So, make time for yourself this Autumn and winter, and let these Wellness Walks with Rosie be your haven. Soak up the natural world and regenerate with a fully qualified, knowledgeable and friendly walking therapist, and learn how to make this rich and fulfilling activity part of your own regular routine.
